| Gesture. It appears in all forms. I have always been an observer. An observer of the human spirit and how it is portrayed by each individual. I have found that a person reveals more about who they really are through spontaneous gestures. Through the jolt of their eyes, or the stretch of their back. Humans have an uncanny way of expressing themselves through their body, as opposed to spoken words. This idea has captivated me since I was a child and it is an idea that I exaggerate in my work. As a painter, I am confined to the two dimensional surface to portray each emotion and gesture. I use color and a wide range of brushwork to emphasize movement. With my latest portraits, the emotion lies within the eyes. This is the gesture I chose to emphasize as I feel that this is the part of the body that releases itself so freely and unapologetically. It is a portal to each persons being while still being unique to each individual. I want to express stories of humanity as simply and eloquently as possible. With these works the viewer can sense another's story, and hopefully, at the same time, relate to it and make it their own. This is what I strive for in each of my works. |
